KEY POINTS
- Vinit Patil, who works as a support engineer, said his superior informed him about his 6 am shift by calling him at 1:30 am
- The anonymous employee was declared toxic and unprofessional on the Developers India subreddit, where he sought advice.
- Some suggested reporting late-night calls to someone higher up in the company, while others thought it was best to simply ignore them.
“I didn’t answer the call because I was asleep and the phone was next to me, but I didn’t realise I had received the call until I woke up at 6am and looked at my phone wondering what the consequences would be.”
Her superior’s behavior was almost unanimously described as “unprofessional” and “toxic,” and some suggested she report it to a manager.
However, according to one user, in a workplace like Patil’s, the rot is likely to reach the highest levels.
“In a toxic work culture“Reporting to the project manager probably won’t help, as he or she could be part of the problem. If these problems continue, changing projects, or even companies, might be the best option,” they argued.
“I also work on a support project and often get calls from senior colleagues at any time. I once got a call at 4 am on a Sunday morning… usually deployments happen on weekends and I get a lot of such calls at any time just to help out due to resource shortage… I never take such calls and there are no consequences,” reads one comment.
“Poor resource planning on their part does not necessarily mean an emergency at the mine.”
