On the first day, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bowl first. England did not get off to a great start as they lost their first 4 wickets for 132 runs. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, it was Joe Root who stood firm at one end as he scored another century. In fact, Root scored his 33rd wickets in this game.
The English batsman became the active batsman with the most Test tons at the moment, surpassing Kane Williamson and Steve Smith. He also equalled Alastair Cook’s record for the most centuries by an English batsman in history. He also joined fellow greats Micheal Vaughan and Graham Gooch, as the player with the joint-most tons (6) at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground.
Apart from Joe Root, Gus Atkinson held his own in the final over as he was not out and scored 74 off 81 balls. England finished the first day on 358/7.
A big Day 2 would push England to a victory in the game, and thus also secure a series win with one match still to play.
