Era of uninterrupted dialogue with Pakistan over, says EAM S Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar on Friday (August 30) said that the era of uninterrupted dialogue with Pakistan was over. The minister made it clear that India will not remain passive and will react to unfolding developments.

“The era of uninterrupted dialogue with Pakistan is over. Actions have consequences. As far as Jammu and Kashmir is concerned, Article 370 no longer exists. So, the question is what kind of relationship can we contemplate with Pakistan. What I mean is that we are not passive and irrespective of whether events take a positive or negative direction, we will react either way,” Jaishankar said at a book launch event.

The comments came after Islamabad extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) heads of government meeting in Islamabad in October. The SCO, which comprises India, China, Russia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, is an influential economic and security bloc that has emerged as one of the largest transregional international organisations.

Islamabad and New Delhi have a long history of tense relations, mainly due to the Kashmir issue and cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan.

He also spoke about Bangladesh and the Maldives. “Neighbouring countries are always an enigma. Tell me which country doesn’t have problems with its neighbours,” he added.
