Following the brutal murder of a doctor in Kolkata, a post has gone viral on social media claiming that the police are providing free transport services to women at night across the country. However, this claim is totally misleading. No agency in India has launched such a transport scheme.
While it is true that the number was associated with a free home delivery service, this service was exclusively for women in Ludhiana, India, in 2019. The Nagpur police also allegedly launched a similar scheme in 2019.
According to a fact check In 2019, Boom Live also saw a complaint go viral using the same helpline numbers (1091 and 7837018555) stating that the Kolkata Police had introduced a ‘free ride’ scheme for women travelling late at night. But the Kolkata Police has dismissed the complaint and clarified that their department has not launched any such specific scheme.
Karnataka Police Department, Hyderabad Police and even Bengaluru Police have also warned residents about this fraudulent scheme circulating online that falsely claims that the police are providing free rides for women between 10 pm and 6 am. They suggested that women should only call 112 in case of emergency.
