Following the horrific rape and murder of a postgraduate doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, doctors across the country have initiated a nationwide shutdown of emergency departments. The Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) called for the strike, which began on August 13, in response to the tragic incident and perceived delay in the investigation.

Protests grow over delay in investigation

Junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College questioned the seven-day deadline given by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to resolve the case and said their strike will continue till their demands, which include a judicial inquiry, capital punishment for the culprits and adequate compensation for the victim’s family, are met. They also criticised the delay and demanded the dismissal of senior officials of the hospital.

Controversy over hospital management

Amid the protests, the hospital’s director Sandip Ghosh resigned, sparking further controversies as he was reassigned as the director of the National Medical College in Kolkata. The appointment of Dr Suhrita Paul as the new director of the RG Kar Medical College was also criticised due to her past controversies.

National support for striking doctors

Several medical associations have supported the striking doctors, including the Federation of Resident Doctors Associations of India (FORDA), which called for suspension of elective services across the country. The West Bengal Doctors Forum also called on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for an impartial inquiry and increased security for healthcare workers.

Police investigation under scrutiny

The police investigation has intensified and officers have questioned several doctors and people connected to the case. Authorities have also summoned an assistant professor who informed the victim’s parents about her death. The situation remains tense as protests continue and doctors demand swift justice.
