Following the death of a patient during treatment at Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College Hospital, the maternity ward was vandalised by her relatives. The incident took place on the night of August 20. During the vandalism, the monitor installed in the hospital was broken by the relatives by throwing it on the ground. This machine is used to check the oxygen level, heartbeat and other tests in critically ill patients. Following the incident, the doctors of the hospital left the ward and fled. As soon as information was received about this incident, Sadar police reached the Medical College Hospital and normalised the situation.

Bharti Kumari, a pregnant woman from Chatra, was admitted to the delivery room of Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College Hospital on August 20 for delivery. Doctors said that the quantity of blood in the patient’s body is low. Advised for blood transfusion. The child was born after a C-section. The patient’s condition started deteriorating due to lack of blood. Doctors referred him to RIMS for better treatment. During this time the woman died. After the death of the patient, 40-50 relatives reached the hospital and started creating ruckus. The family members who were creating ruckus started looking for the woman doctor. She also misbehaved with the nurses in the ward. Seeing the angry crowd, the doctor left the ward and ran away.

Second incident of attack on health workers in six days:

This is the second incident of attack on healthcare workers and doctors at the Sheikh Bhikhari Medical College Hospital in the last six days. On August 16 too, the doctor was assaulted by the patient’s relatives. Following this, the doctors suspended the emergency services of the hospital, including the OPD. Hospital Superintendent Binod Kumar said that this incident was reported to the Sadar police station on the same evening. Further action will be taken following the request of the doctor. The Sadar SDO has also demanded additional security forces to protect the doctors at the hospital.
