Fitness trackers: a finger on the pulse: founders stay healthy and fit through wearable devices

Burning out is common when looking to build a startup, but sleep-deprived schedules are expected to make founders turn to data and technology for solutions.

Fitness bracelets are no more, replaced by wearable devices to monitor sleep, not only the quantity but also the quality.

“I wasn’t sleeping well, so I thought of putting on a tracker,” said Prashant Sachan, founder and CEO of AppsForBharat, who has been wearing a ring at night for the past four months.

“As a startup founder, if I put a metric somewhere, that would improve.”

For Social Enterprise winner Aniket Doegar, co-founder and CEO of Haqdarshak Empowerment Solutions, sleep problems began during Covid, when the pandemic brought with it a higher level of anxiety.

“Right now it’s just about measuring and tracking, but not changing behavior. So I might look for something that helps drive my behavior as well.” Prateep Basu, CEO and co-founder of satellite Earth observation data and analytics firm SatSure, has been tracking his heart rate for the past two years after he started suffering from anxiety attacks.

If you’re stressed, your resting heart rate will be above 80 or 90, so your goal is to keep it around 60, he said, explaining why he thinks this is a better measure than sleeping.

“If I’m not around 60 BPM, that’s a good indicator for me to take a break,” Basu said.

“At that time, I take a deep breath or meditate or even watch some comedian Reels or look at memes.”

Satish Kannan, co-founder and CEO of MediBuddy, is one step ahead: It tracks many more body parameters than just sleep.

But there’s a business angle to that, too: You keep testing the latest products on the market to see if you can integrate them into your platform.

“For sleep, I wear the Apple Watch, then I wear the Ultrahuman ring and Dozee, which is under the bed and tracks how much you turn while you sleep. I also wear the Abbott sugar monitoring patch and a Whoop band as well to see if it helps.” can integrate into MediBuddy.”

Zomato’s Deepinder Goyal wore the Ultrahuman Smart Glucose Monitoring patch, while Accel’s Prashanth Prakash sported an Oura ring, which provides 24-hour information on sleep, fitness and stress, as well as a Whoop band, which monitors sleep , tension, recovery and health.

Even Flipkart’s Kalyan Krishnamurthy sported a Whoop band.

“These devices help because you become a little more disciplined,” said Ankit Nagori, co-founder of Curefoods. “I have always loved sports and fitness. I used to be a cricketer but now I play badminton. This band mainly helps me monitor my recovery so I can plan my training accordingly for the next day.”

Some like Kunal Sachdev, co-founder of Debtworks, have jumped health wearables and simply believe in healthy eating and supplements.

“I was also wearing a smartwatch, but it became more complicated because you’re always looking at what your heart rate is, your sleep time, and that creates a lot of anxiety,” she said.

“It’s been over a year since I stopped using it. I used the Fitbit, the Apple Watch, the Ultrahuman ring; now I just supplement my diet with magnesium.”
