Following Punjab High Court order, BFHSU released new NRI quota merit list, Career News

The Punjab Haryana High Court had quashed the state government’s notification amending the conditions to allow immediate family members of NRIs to be considered in the quota for admission to MBBS courses. Now its Baba Farid University of Health Sciences has released a new merit list, in which more than 45 per cent of the candidates have been eliminated. According to this new merit list, 66 candidates have been allotted seats for admission in the MBBS course under the NRI quota. Of them, 32 students are children of an NRI, while 34 are NRIs or children of NRIs originating from any Indian state other than Punjab.

Let us tell you that there are 196 NRI quota seats in MBBS and 196 seats in BDS respectively. During the first round of counselling, BFUHS allotted NRI quota MBBS seats to 120 candidates following the revised provisions. 66 were allotted to NRIs and 54 to family members of NRIs under the quota. Now, following the High Court order, BFUHS has withdrawn the names of 54 NRI-sponsored candidates.

The state government notification set aside by the Punjab High Court said that NRIs or their children who are of the origin of the state of Punjab and bonafide NRIs or their children who are of the origin of any Indian state or union territory other than Punjab, NRIs are eligible for the quota seats. If NRI seats remain vacant after their absence, candidates who are wards or immediate relatives of NRIs will also be considered under the NRI quota seats.

The fee for an MBBS seat in government and private medical colleges is Rs 92.3 lakh, while the fee for a BDS seat is Rs 37 lakh. 15% of the total seats in private and government institutions in Punjab are reserved for NRI candidates. However, in the absence of eligible candidates, a large portion of these seats remain vacant every year. Vacant seats under NRI quota are converted into general quota seats after two rounds of counselling.
