This is the first time that Pakistani Army has publicly confirmed its direct involvement in the 1999 Kargil War. During the conflict, Islamabad had previously denied direct military involvement, describing infiltrators as “Kashmiri freedom fighters” or “mujahideen” and claiming that Pakistani forces were only “actively patrolling” while “tribal leaders” manned the heights.
It is noteworthy that the Pakistani army refused to accept the corpses of its soldiers during the Kargil war. It was the Indian army that performed the last rites.
Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan’s prime minister during the Kargil war, also acknowledged the country’s role, although he did so after leaving office. Sharif admitted that Pakistan had violated the 1999 Lahore Declaration, which he had signed with former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
Kargil War of 1999
The Kargil War, fought between India and Pakistan in 1999, was a major military conflict that took place in the Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir. The war began when Pakistani soldiers, disguised as militants, infiltrated into Indian territory and occupied strategic peaks along the Line of Control (LoC). India detected the infiltration in May 1999, leading to fierce battles between the two nations in the challenging high-altitude terrain of Kargil.
Despite difficult terrain and high altitudes, Indian forces made significant gains, using artillery and air strikes to dislodge the infiltrators.
The war, which lasted about three months, ended in July 1999 when Indian forces successfully regained control of the territory.
