Former director of the Faculty of Medicine RG Kar appointed director of the CNMC hours after resigning

Former director of RG Kar College of Medicine He is now appointed as the director of the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH). The West Bengal government’s decision has raised outrage. The former director of the RG Kar Medical College, Dr Sandip Ghosh, resigned after the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor on the college premises.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has appointed Dr Suhrita Paul as the new principal of the RG Kar Medical College. Dr Ghosh’s appointment has further triggered the ongoing protests. While resigning on Monday, Ghosh had claimed “moral responsibility” after the heinous crime on the college premises. Her new appointment has come as a surprise and anger as she mentioned that she would be resigning not only from her post but also from the government service.

Sources cited by news agencies said that the government accepted Dr Ghosh’s resignation as director of RG Kar, but his resignation from the state-run medical services was rejected.

Meanwhile, the current director of NMCH, Ajay Ray, has been transferred as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the state Health Department.

The case of the doctor from Calcutta

On August 9, a female doctor in postgraduate training was found raped and murdered at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in CalcuttaThe brutal incident triggered a nationwide protest by both medical and non-medical professionals. In solidarity, the Federation of Resident Doctors Associations (FORDA) wrote a letter to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, terming the incident as “the biggest travesty that has ever happened in the history of the resident doctors’ community.”

FORDA has announced the nationwide suspension of elective services in hospitals, effective Monday, August 12, 2024. “Resignation of all responsible authorities including the Director, MSVP, Dean, Head of Department of Pulmonary Medicine, ACP of RG Kar MC&H Police Post who failed to perform their duty to protect the dignity and life of a WOMAN who in this case was a doctor on duty,” FORDA said in the letter.
