Former Jharkhand CM Champai Soren announces new political party, says door open for alliances

Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren has declared his intention to form a new political party, citing the “humiliation” of his former party, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), as the catalyst for this move. Soren, a tribal leader known for his pivotal role in the Jharkhand statehood movement, stressed that he is not retiring from politics but is embarking on a new chapter.

In a statement made after his arrival at his ancestral village of Jhilingora in Seraikela-Kharsawan district, Soren, 67, spoke about his decision to form a new political party. “I had mentioned three options – retirement, organisation or friendship. I will not retire; I will strengthen the party, a new party, and if I meet a good friend on the way, I will go ahead with him,” he said.

Soren added, “I have embarked on a mission to bring justice to the oppressed, the Dalits, the tribals and the poor of Jharkhand. My vision is to make the state an ideal state and I am working towards achieving this goal. I am sure that the rural communities are eagerly awaiting the next steps and I am sure that I will receive all support.”

Soren, who is often called the “Tiger of Jharkhand” for his important role in the creation of the state in 2000, expressed frustration with the JMM leadership. He claimed that his efforts and contributions to the party were met with disdain and that he was left without support at crucial moments.

The veteran leader said, “No one from the JMM contacted me. This is the land of Jharkhand… I have been fighting since my student life. I was involved in the agitation for a separate state of Jharkhand under the leadership of party supremo Shibu Soren.”

Soren’s announcement has raised speculation about possible alliances, including a possible tie-up with the BJP. He clarified that he is open to collaborating with like-minded organisations but has been forced to explore new political avenues due to the perception of “bitter humiliation” during his tenure as chief minister.

“I posted what I thought was appropriate. The whole country knows what I thought,” Soren said, referring to his recent social media post expressing his displeasure.
