NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick is back in the spotlight for his latest video, which captures a bright green meteor exploding in Earth’s night sky. The commander of SpaceX’s Crew-8 mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS) shared a new series of time-lapse photos.
The camera located above Cairo, Egypt, vividly captured a bright green flash on Monday, September 3 at 5:42 am (IST). This happened while the astronaut was trying to Take a picture of the core of the Milky WayThe fireball explosion shown in the time-lapse was a result of the meteorite disintegrating after entering Earth’s atmosphere.
On social media platform X, Matthew Dominick wrote: “I showed this to a couple of friends yesterday to see what they thought.” He added: “They both thought it was a meteor exploding in the atmosphere. A pretty bright one called a bolide..”

Matthew Dominick said: “When I went to review the footage afterwards, I found the bolide.”
The astronaut shared another version of the time-lapse in the comments section of the post, a longer, faster frame with the caption: “It is interesting to compare the size of the bolide explosion with other objects in view, such as the Mediterranean, Cairo or lightning.”
In the fastest version, the shooting star appears as a brief flash at the top right of the frame.
