Veteran Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer announced his retirement from international football on Wednesday, August 21. Neuer became the fourth German legend to hang up his boots following his country’s poor showing at Euro 2024.

Neuer, 38, made his senior international debut in 2009 and went on to make 124 appearances. He was part of Germany’s 2014 FIFA World Cup-winning squad and also donned the goalkeeping gloves for every game at the recent Euro 2024 home tournament.

Neuer announced his decision to quit international football with an emotional video message to fans on his Instagram page. Neuer added that he feels physically fit, but is looking to fully concentrate on his club career at Bayern Munich.

“Anyone who knows me knows that this decision was not easy for me,” said Manuel Neuer. “I feel very good physically and of course the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico would have been very attractive for me. At the same time, I am convinced that now is the right time to take this step and fully concentrate on the future at FC Bayern Munich.

“It was a very important time that left its mark on me and I am very proud of it. Winning the World Cup in 2014 and the special atmosphere at the European Championships at home this year are highlights for which I am very grateful. It was an honour for me to be the captain of our national team until 2023. I loved wearing the German national team jersey.”

Neuer joined German greats Thomas Müller, Ilkay Gündogan and Toni Kroos in bidding farewell to international football over the past two months. Kroos retired from all forms of football following Germany’s 2-1 quarter-final defeat to eventual champions Spain. Müller hung up his boots in July, while national team captain Gündogan announced his decision to retire from international football on 20 August.
