If you leave Delhi for Dehradun Currently, it takes about five hours (without breaks, of course) to reach the hills, but this December, that travel time can be expected to be halved with the new Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, scheduled to open by the end of the year.
Once completed, the expressway will reduce travel time between Akshardham in Delhi and Dehradun by several hours, making it a convenient option for both leisure and business travellers. The project has some interesting features such as the 12-kilometre elevated wildlife corridor and an animal underpass to minimise human-wildlife conflicts in the forest areas of Rajaji National Park and Shiwalik Reserve.
The initial phase of the project, from Akshardham to the Eastern Peripheral Expressway Interchange, is expected to be operational by November 2023, providing much-needed relief to commuters facing daily traffic jams in Delhi. However, the controlled link road to Haridwar will take another five months to complete and could be opened to commuters by 2025.
The expressway will reportedly offer numerous entry and exit points, catering to the needs of commuters travelling from different parts of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. The Delhi-EPE section includes a 19-kilometre elevated carriageway for through traffic, while the six-lane service road below will accommodate local traffic.
