Ghulam Nabi Azad’s party in a fix as he steps back from J-K assembly poll campaign. ‘Upto candidates now,’ says ex-CM

Ghulam Nabi Azad, leader of the Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP), will not campaign for the party’s candidates in the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections due to health issues.

The party, founded two years ago by the former Congress veteran, has presented 13 candidates for the first phase of voting in the Union Territory scheduled for September 18. Its fate remains uncertain now.

On Wednesday, AzadAzad, 75, regretted not being able to campaign for DPAP candidates. “Unforeseen circumstances have forced me to step back from campaigning… Candidates must assess whether they can continue without my presence. If they feel my absence would affect their chances, they are free to withdraw their candidature,” the DPAP said in a statement, quoting Azad, the former prime minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

This is the first one assembly election The DPAP is contesting the Phase 1 polls, which were floated by Azad in September 2022 after he left the Congress party after decades of association. Among the 13 names who filed their candidature for the Phase 1 poll are two former MPs Abdul Majeed Wani and Mohammad Amin Bhat.

The DPAP, which projected itself as an “alternative” to regional parties, National Conference and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had a dismal electoral debut. All three Lok Sabha candidates lost their deposits in the 2017 elections.024 general electionsThe situation worsened with defections in the run-up to the Assembly elections. Many leaders, including treasurer and former minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din, left the party.

Jammu and Kashmir Voting will be held in three phases starting from September 18. This will be the first assembly election to be held in the former state in ten years.

In the last Assembly elections held in 2014, the PDP emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats. The BJP finished second with 25 seats. The PDP, then led by Mufti Mohamed SayeedMehbooba’s father forged an unprecedented alliance with the BJP, a party with very different ideologies.

However, the PDP-BJP government could not last for the entire term as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) withdrew its support to the PDP in 2018. Since then, the erstwhile state has been under the central government.
