Goa’s upcoming state-of-the-art cruise terminal will boost tourist arrivals and boost local economy, says Minister

Goa witnessed a 40% increase in cruise passenger arrivals in the financial year 2023-24 and now the Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) is aiming to boost the numbers by expanding and developing the International and Domestic Cruise Terminal in the state, which is expected to be completed by March 2025, according to an official release.

The new terminal, along with a host of facilities to be developed, will increase passenger comfort and enhance the cruise experience of travellers, while also improving the local economy and promoting sustainable practices. According to PTI, a senior MPA official said the infrastructure improvements will boost the regionโ€™s position on the map of the global cruise industry.

In a tweet, Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said that in order to achieve the target of 1.5 million cruise tourists by 2030, he inspected the progress of work at the domestic and international cruise terminals under construction at Mormugao Port.

Speaking at the Maritime States Development Council meeting held in Goa on September 12-13, an official noted that rising global cruise traffic has significantly boosted cruise arrivals at the Mormugao port, indicating substantial growth potential. During the fiscal year 2023-24, the number of cruise calls increased by 15% and the number of cruise passengers increased by 40% compared to the previous fiscal year.

On the first day of the Maritime States Development Council meeting, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal visited the proposed site of the new cruise terminal and said that the new cruise terminal will boost tourism and increase cruise travellers.

The facility is designed to focus on the passenger experience, and the international terminal features 24 immigration counters, 10 check-in counters and a waiting room, among other amenities.

The domestic terminal will feature 12 check-in counters, lounges and additional facilities. In addition, an auxiliary commercial building will offer an experiential shopping area aimed at cruise tourists and will remain open to the public. The terminal will feature duty-free retail stores, lounges and food courts.
