Google Chrome on Android now reads your web pages aloud with 10 different voices – here’s how it works

Google Chrome on Android is set to get a major accessibility boost with the new “Listen to this page” feature. The feature was first announced by Google as part of the Android feature drop last month and is now reportedly rolling out via the Chrome 130 update.

When the feature was leaked behind an experimental flag in June of this year, it had very limited use cases and the audio was turned off as soon as the user closed Chrome or turned off their phone screen, similar to how YouTube Music works.

However, according to a latest report from 9to5Google, the Listen to this page feature is getting a major update and can now continue playing music even when you exit the Chrom app and open other apps.

The reader menu appears at the bottom of the page when the article is running in the foreground, while when switching to a different app, media controls are available in quick settings, where you can play or pause music, go to a specific part of the page. or go up and down in the audio 10 seconds. Meanwhile, by tapping the reader in Chrome, there is also an option to adjust the playback speed from 0.5x to 4x and select from 10 different voices.

Additionally, Google also allows you to add a dedicated play button for web pages by long-pressing the new tab icon, clicking edit shortcut, and switching to Listen to this page. Notably, Chrome is already one of the most popular browsers on Android and with the latest updates it has also gone neck and neck with the Listen Page feature in Safari, which offers similar functionality.
