Staurikosaurus, which lived during the Late Triassic period about 230 million years ago, is known for its distinctive body structure. This bipedal dinosaur was relatively small, measuring approximately 10 feet long and characterized by its slender build and long limbs. Paleontologists believe it was a carnivore that ate smaller animals of its time.
Discovered in the early 1970s in Brazil, Staurikosaurus occupies a critical place in the evolutionary timeline. It is considered one of the first members of the theropod group, which includes modern birds and other carnivorous dinosaurs. The discovery of this dinosaur provided valuable information about the diversity and adaptability of early dinosaurs.
Nicknamed the “Southern Cross lizard” after the southern hemisphere constellation, Staurikosaurus stood around 80cm tall, was about 2 meters long and weighed about 30kg, about the size of a large dog. Despite its small stature, this carnivorous predator was known for its agility.
It had a long tail for balance and moved on two legs, allowing it to be a fast runner. Its most distinctive feature, however, was its set of serrated teeth, which curved back towards its throat, perfectly designed to catch and hold prey.
