Google is reportedly working to expand the availability of its generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) assistant, Google Gemini, in your car. A new report has said that Google might soon update Android Auto, its Android-based service for in-car infotainment, to replace Google Assistant with Google Gemini. The AI-powered chatbot is already available on Pixel smartphones and is gradually making its way to Android devices from other brands. Google’s next move may prove to be the final nail in the coffin of Google Assistant.
The folks at Android Authority have discovered references to Google-based Gemini functionality in the Android Auto app in the teardown of the app’s latest beta version. The Android Auto v12.8.143544 app has several clues that point to upcoming AI services, but the details of the functionality are unclear. The teardown has also revealed what the Gemini app for Android Auto might look like. It may have a monochrome app icon, which is called “kitt” in a filename. The same package also has references to different elements, including those that could allow users to start a conversation. Basically, it could use the same keyword as the one for Google Assistant.
There are other references to how Google Gemini will be integrated into Android Auto to offer AI services that users can request with voice commands. This service is called Gemini Live and is currently only available to Gemini Advanced subscribers as part of Google One AI Premium. Its version of Android Auto will likely only work for paying subscribers, similarly. However, since Google Live doesn’t need dedicated hardware, Google is optimistic about its plans to expand it to devices beyond smartphones and tablets.
Google Gemini allows users to get help from the company’s artificial intelligence to find answers to various questions. The AI chatbot uses both its data set and the Internet to deliver answers in different ways. Initially available on the web, Google Gemini can now be accessed on smartphones with the Google Live service.
