Google has introduced a new conversational feature for its Gemini chatbot, called Gemini Live, as a direct competitor to Open AI‘s advanced voice mode for ChatGPTUnlike the traditional drop-in/drop-out model, Gemini Live allows users to engage in fluid conversations with the chatbot, which can be paused and resumed at any time. Additionally, users have the option to choose the desired voice for the chatbot before starting a conversation.
During a recent event for the Pixel 9 series, Google demoed Gemini Live, showing off its ability to handle real-time interactions with minimal lag. In one demo, a Google executive asked the chatbot for advice on how to create a science experiment with his son. The chatbot was quick to respond, providing a natural, human-like conversational experience. The feature also supports hands-free use, making it more convenient for users on the go.
Google envisions Gemini Live as a personal assistant that users can discuss new ideas with or practice conversations with. Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president of Devices and Services, hinted at the feature’s advanced capabilities, which include conducting in-depth research and generating fully sourced research reports in a Google Doc.
Gemini Live is available starting today with support for 10 new voices. The feature isn’t free, however; it’s part of the Gemini Advanced subscription, which costs $19.99 per month and offers access to Google’s most powerful model, Gemini 1.5 Pro. The feature is initially rolling out to Android devices, with iOS support expected in the coming weeks.
Google’s move comes shortly after OpenAI began offering its advanced voice mode for ChatGPT, but only to a limited number of users with a ChatGPT Plus subscription, which also costs $20 per month.
