Gujarat: He Gujarat The Government has decided to introduce underwater tourism, which allows visitors to explore the sunken city of Dwarka. An MoU has been signed with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders to launch India’s first underwater tourism facility, which is expected to go live before Diwali in October 2024.
This ongoing project will offer an immersive experience that will allow tourists to delve into the culture of Dwarka, a city steeped in legends and spiritual significance. According to myth, Dwarka was submerged in the Arabian Sea when Lord Krishna left the world, marking the beginning of Kali Yuga.
This initiative aims to grow India’s spiritual tourism landscape by offering a new perspective on the submerged ruins of Dwarka.
In recent years, India’s tourism sector has been growing and has seen an increase in the number of tourists from other countries. The number of domestic tourists has also increased. The number of foreign tourists arriving in India this year during January-June was 43.80 lakh, which is 106 per cent higher than the figure (21.24 lakh) for the corresponding period in 2022.
Domestic tourism reached 677 million in 2021 and grew to 1.731 billion in 2022, according to data from the Ministry of Tourism.
India’s tourism industry has been gaining ground, with the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index ranking the country 54th with a score of 4.1. Last year’s G20 summit highlighted India’s tourism potential, with leaders from several nations participating and showcasing the country as a top destination.
Religious tourism, in particular, has seen significant growth, with an increase in visitors to Varanasi, Ayodhya and Prayagraj. In a single year, these cities welcomed an impressive 140 million tourists. Varanasi, for example, welcomed a remarkable 82 million visitors in 2022, a four-fold increase from 2019. This represented 26% of all arrivals in 2022, up from less than 4% in 2019.
Varanasi has overtaken Agra, home to the iconic Taj Mahal, as Uttar Pradesh’s most visited city, with tourist influx reaching unprecedented levels.
