Why do we celebrate Hindi Day today? History and significance

Happy Hindu Diwas 2024India celebrates! no diwas September 14 is celebrated as India’s Independence Day to honor the country’s official language. According to the census, more than 53 percent of the Indian population speaks HindiIt is spoken as a mother tongue in several parts of northern India. To honour the language and its heritage, we celebrate Hindi Day. On Hindi Day, the President of India presents Rajbhasha awards to people who have contributed to the language.

But why is Hindi Diwas celebrated on September 14? This is because in 1949, Hindi was adopted as the official language of independent India on September 14.

History and meaning of Hindi festivals

In 1918, a group of Hindi scholars held the Hindi Sahitya Sammelana or Literary Conference to promote the use of Hindi as a national language. This sammelana played a pivotal role in recognising Hindi as the official language of the country. Eminent figures like Beohar Rajendra Simha, Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Kaka Kalelkar, Maithili Sharan Gupt and Seth Govind Das played a pivotal role in championing Hindi as the official language of India.

Following independence on 14 September 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, as the official language of independent India. This decision was taken to promote and develop Hindi as the lingua franca of India and to unite the diverse linguistic and cultural regions of the nation. The first Hindi Diwas was celebrated on 14 September 1953.

In 1977, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee became the first leader to address an international audience in Hindi.
