Suresh RainaFormer India batsman and 2011 World Cup winner has backed the vice-captain Shubman Gill as the ideal candidate for India’s next T20I captain despite BCCI naming him only recently Suryakumar Yadav as T20 captain ahead of Hardik Pandya and even Jasprit Bumrah. Before Suryakumar Yadav, Shubman Gill was named captain of the young Indian team for their five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe. Later, for the T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka, Gill was chosen as vice-captain. Earlier, he had been named captain of the Gujarat Titans, their Indian Premier League (LPI) franchise. Reflecting on this, former India star Suresh Raina suggested that if GT were to clinch the IPL title, Gill could be India’s future captain.

“Shubman Gill is a superstar. Gill being vice-captain means someone is thinking about him. If he does well in the IPL and wins the trophy, he will be the future (captain). He will be the next superstar,” Raina told PTI.

India will take on Bangladesh in a bilateral series beginning on September 19. Pandya last appeared in a Test match for India in August-September 2018 before undergoing surgery, after which he focused solely on white-ball cricket. There had been rumours that the 30-year-old could make a surprise appearance in India’s squad for the 2023 World Test Championship final, but he dismissed the speculation, stating that he did not want to take the place of a Test regular. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill is expected to feature in the upcoming series.

However, Shubman Gill is one of the key players who is likely to be rested for the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh, which begins on October 7, as part of the BCCI’s workload management policy. As India’s No.3 in Test cricket, Gill is an integral part of the team’s top order, along with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal.
