Badlapur Child Abuse Case: The Bombay High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of the case of alleged sexual harassment of two girls in a school in Badlapur town in Thane district of Maharashtra. A division bench comprising Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice Prithviraj Chavan heard the case. The Bombay High Court on Thursday expressed serious concern over the safety of schools. The court said that if schools are not safe, then the debate on right to education has no significance. Justice Mohite Dere, while hearing cases related to alleged sexual assault of two minors in a school in Badalpur, said that even four-year-old girls were not being saved. This situation is very shocking. The court strongly reprimanded the Badalpur police and asked why the recording of the statement was delayed.

The case of alleged sexual harassment of two girls by a school assistant is gaining momentum. After the matter came to light, there was a massive protest in Badlapur on Tuesday.

What happened to the Badlapur girls?

In view of the growing stir over the Badlapur case, internet services in the city were suspended on Wednesday. Police said they arrested 72 people in connection with the violence during the protest. The accused was arrested on August 17 and has been charged with allegedly sexually assaulting girls in the school toilet. A local court on Wednesday extended the police custody of the accused till August 26.

What steps have been taken so far in the Badlapur case?

Maharashtra The government has ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by senior IPS officer Aarti Singh to probe the alleged sexual harassment of girls. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has also assured that action will be taken against the school. He said the case will be heard quickly and the culprits will not be spared. The school management has suspended the principal, a teacher and an assistant in the matter, while the state government on Tuesday ordered the suspension of three police officers, including a senior police inspector, for alleged negligence in the investigation.
