Hindustan Aeronautics appoints DK Sunil as President and Managing Director

State-owned aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) on Monday (September 9) announced the appointment of Dr DK Sunil as Chairman and Managing Director, effective September 9, 2024.

Dr Sunil, who is serving as Director (Engineering & R&D) at HAL from September 29, 2022, has assumed the additional charge of President & Managing Director. His tenure as President & Managing Director will continue till April 30, 2026 or until further orders from the Ministry of Defence, whichever is earlier. Dr Sunil is not related to any other director of the company.

Dr. Sunil received his Bachelors in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Osmania University, Hyderabad and an MSc in Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering from IIT, Madras. He also completed a PhD in Electronics Sciences from the University of Hyderabad in 2019.

He joined Hindustan Aeronautics in 1987 as a management trainee and has around 37 years of experience in various roles in the company, contributing to design, production, quality improvement and customer service issues.

Under his leadership, new technologies such as high-power radar power supply, voice-activated control system and combined interrogator transponder were developed, which have become new growth areas for the company.

Dr. Sunil also pioneered collaboration with institutions like IIT Kanpur for data links and IIIT Hyderabad for voice recognition technologies. His visionary approach strengthened HAL’s position in cutting-edge technologies.

During his tenure at the Mission Combat Systems R&D Centre in Bengaluru, he led teams focused on innovative projects such as ESA’s active radar, automatic flight control system for Light Combat Helicopters (LCH), and mission computers for helicopter and fighter platforms.

Shares of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd closed at ₹4,654.40, down ₹46.25, or 0.98%, on the BSE.
