According to a senior executive of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Hong Kong The number of Indian travellers is expected to double this year, accompanied by a series of festivals and events to boost tourism. Tourism in Hong Kong Puneet Kumar, the board’s director for South Asia and the Middle East, told the Press Trust of India: “We want to double this figure this year and we have many festivals and events lined up to boost tourism this year. In the first half of 2024, Hong Kong welcomed 181,000 visitors from India, which is 89 per cent of the pre-Covid time.”

Given the growth, the Hong Kong Tourism Board expects to surpass the pre-Covid (2018) level of tourist arrivals this year, Mr Puneet further said.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board has hailed 2018 as the year before the pandemic. However, in 2019, the tourism industry was nearly brought to a standstill with hundreds of flights cancelled. That same year, the country was the scene of protests against the Hong Kong government’s introduction of a bill to amend the Fugitive Offenders Ordinance in relation to extradition.
