Honoring Ratan Tata: Tata Group and Somerville College to build landmark building in Oxford

In a major tribute to the late philanthropist and humanitarian Ratan Tata, the Tata Group and Somerville College, University of Oxford have announced plans to construct the Ratan Tata Building. This initiative, rooted in a decade-long friendship, aims to enhance the academic space and foster impactful research.

The building, which will begin construction in spring 2025 in the Radcliffe Observatory Quarter, will feature seminar rooms, shared study areas and accommodation for visiting scholars, promoting an inclusive and equitable environment.

Additionally, the building will serve as the permanent headquarters of the Oxford India Center for Sustainable Development (OICSD), in line with Tata’s vision of research that drives development. “In Mr. Tata’s vision for India, research and critical inquiry went hand in hand with development and prosperity,” said Mr. N Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons. “This partnership with Somerville College is a tribute to Mr. Tata’s values.”

The design, by London architects Morris+Company, is intended to symbolize the enduring link between Oxford and India. Baroness Royall, Principal of Somerville College, said: “This building is the fruit of many conversations, hopes and dreams… it will remain a permanent legacy in the life of an extraordinary man and a dear friend of Somerville.”

Occupying the last available plot in the prestigious neighborhood, the Ratan Tata building will solidify its role within Oxford’s academic landscape, opposite the Blavatnik School of Government and the new Schwarzman Center for the Humanities.
