Hungary is going crazy with these crazy ice cream scoops

In Hungary, a new ice cream trend is wowing adventurous palates. Roberto Confectionery, a quaint ice cream shop in Tatabanya, has introduced a range of savoury ice creams that are making waves on social media. The shop, the brainchild of Robert Reinhardt, has become famous for its quirky flavours, such as goulash ice cream, chicken with paprika and even spaghetti bolognese.

Beer, potato ice cream

Reinhardt, 44, who started his business with beer ice cream and potato pancakes, has seen his business soar after experimenting with tasty Hungarian dishes. His inventive approach has expanded beyond local cuisine to include international favourites such as scrambled eggs with bacon. “It’s not just a gimmick; there’s real potential for exciting flavours,” Reinhardt explains. Priced at 500 forints (1.27 euros) a scoop, the ice cream has significantly boosted the shop’s turnover, prompting Reinhardt’s wife Ena to admit her surprise at the overwhelming response.

How do dessert lovers react to eccentric Hungarian flavours?

Customer reactions to the unconventional flavours are mixed, but generally positive. Masseuse Ildiko praised the special offerings, particularly the tomato soup and fried cheese flavours. “They were unusual, but surprisingly delicious,” she said. Some customers, however, are less impressed. Lawyer Krisztian Kiss appreciated the authenticity but expressed reluctance to return, while his young son found the experience unsettling.

Despite some negative comments, curiosity and enthusiasm around these unusual delicacies continues to grow. Social media has played a crucial role, with posts about the flavours garnering tens of thousands of views, with some reaching a million. Reinhardt is capitalising on this momentum and plans to open a second shop in Budapest and continue offering his signature ice creams all year round.
