Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said he would take a stand and not allow ‘Miya’ Muslims to “take over” Assam.

Sarma was speaking in the assembly on the adjournment motions moved by the opposition parties to discuss the law and order situation in the state in the backdrop of the rape of a 14-year-old girl in Nagaon.

Responding to the motion, he said the crime rate has not increased when taking into account population growth.

When the opposition accused him of being partisan, Sarma retorted: “I will take sides. What can you do about it?”

“Why are people from Lower Assam going to Upper Assam? So that the Miya Muslims can take over Assam? We will not allow that to happen,” he said.

Amid the heated debate, members of the Treasury and opposition parties stormed the House lobby, prompting Speaker Biswajit Daimary to adjourn proceedings for 10 minutes.

Congress, AIUDF and CPI(M) legislators and lone independent legislator Akhil Gogoi moved four adjournment motions to discuss the situation arising out of rising crime in the state, including crimes against women.
