IC 814 cabin crew chief Anil Sharma slams Netflix’s web series makers, points out ‘mistakes’

IC 814 cabin crew chief Anil Sharma, in an exclusive interview with India TV on Wednesday, slammed the makers of the Netflix web series (IC814: The Kandahar Hijack), saying that the events were shown in the wrong way in the OTT series. Netflix’s latest series, IC814: The Kandahar Hijack, sparked controversy for its depiction of the hijackers’ codenames as ‘Bhola’ and ‘Shankar’.

Sharma said that he could not watch the web series after 5.5 episodes due to incorrect details being displayed in it.

“I watched 5.5 episodes and couldn’t continue because I lost the courage to bear it any longer. I disagreed with the creators on several points of the show,” said the head of the cabin crew of IC 814.

The creators said the story is based on a book, then said it is a fictional drama, contradicting themselves. If it is a fictional drama, why did they show real footage of bureaucratic activities? he argued.

“Maybe I am not competent enough to understand cinema or art works, but since I was part of the incident, I cannot say that things are right. The defenders of the web series say that it should be seen from a creative angle or as a work of art. I would not have any problem with it if it was not called IC-814. A film, Zameen (2003), was made on a similar subject. I had no objection because it had a different name,” Sharma said.

They manipulated the lead character, he said, adding that the makers changed the name of the commander from Devi Sharan to Sharan Dev to be closer to reality as per their convenience, Sharma was quoted as saying.

If wrong facts are shown, future generations will consider them as truth, he said.

“The makers of the film showed me in a pool of blood, which is incorrect,” he said. “They showed the hostages slapping each other, which is also not correct,” Sharma said.

“The creators showed five cabin crew members, which is technically incorrect,” he said, adding that even my book doesn’t mention such nonsense.

Did the terrorists show their human side?

Asked whether the terrorists showed a human side, he recalled that on the first day they killed one and said they would kill all of them.

“I wrote in my book that their strategy was to alternate between horror and humor. They made fun of each other all day long. But we didn’t take them seriously. Both sides were polite to each other,” he recalled.

Meanwhile, in a latest development, under pressure from the government, Netflix India said it has included the real and code names of the Indian Airlines plane hijackers depicted in the web series ‘IC814: The Kandahar Hijack’.
