Controversy over IC 814 continues: ANI files copyright infringement suit against Netflix producers | Movie News

New Delhi: After being accused of changing the names of Pakistani Muslims to Hindu code names, now the makers of the Netflix series, ‘IC 814: The Kandahar Hijak’ have once again found themselves in trouble. News agency ANI has filed a lawsuit demanding the removal of 4 episodes of the series.

ANI claims that the series features images of prominent figures, including former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, General Pervez Musharraf and several terrorists, without proper license.

According to a Bar and Bench report, ANI’s legal representative, advocate Sidhant Kumar, argued that the use of the footage in the series, which has been criticised for allegedly downplaying Pakistan’s role in the kidnapping and for allegedly serving as a public relations tool for Pakistan’s spy agency ISI, has damaged ANI’s reputation.

Kumar said that while the film’s producers had sought permission to use the footage in 2021, no agreement was reached. He stressed that unauthorized use of ANI images, particularly those featuring the ANI logo, constitutes trademark infringement. Kumar said that four of the six episodes of the series make extensive use of ANI footage, including footage exclusive to Pakistan.

Justice Mini Pushkarna heard the case today and issued a notice to the producers. The court has directed that responses to ANI’s interim relief application be filed within two days. Another hearing is scheduled to be held on Friday.
