The closure of monala well-known restaurant in Islamabad, has left its employees in a state of shock and despair. The decision, ordered by Pakistan’s Supreme Court, affects not only Monal, but all restaurants operating within Islamabad’s Margalla Hills National Park.
Monal, which has been a fixture since its inception in 2006, announced that it would cease operations on September 11, 2024. The restaurant, known for offering a panoramic dining experience, shared an emotional farewell message on its Facebook page: “Since 2006, it has been an absolute pleasure for the Monal family to serve and showcase a positive image of Pakistan and its beautiful people. This journey was full of success stories and emotions for the team affiliated with us, but now it is time to say goodbye.”
The ruling has left more than 700 Monal employees unemployed. In a video that has gone viral on social media, one employee is seen collapsing upon receiving the dismissal letter, while others were captured wiping away tears as they processed the news.
Monal owner Luqman Ali Afzal addressed the plight in a farewell letter to his staff, acknowledging the harsh reality of their sudden unemployment. He wrote: “I wish I could provide work to everyone overnight, but given the current financial crisis, the group is unable to redeploy them to other projects. Please accept this as a divinely made decision and start looking for alternative employment.”
The plight of the laid-off workers touched many, with some social media users expressing sympathy, with one person commenting on the Viral video“She fainted because she was thinking about her responsibilities towards her family.” Another user added: “I pray that they find better jobs to support themselves.”
