‘If the demands are not met…’, doctors warn Mamata’s government gives an ultimatum until October 22

Calcutta Rape murder case: The agitated doctors of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal, who are demanding justice for their deceased colleague, on Friday threatened that if their demands are not met, all doctors in the state will go on strike on October 22.

The doctors said they are in talks with their colleagues in other states and that a national strike could also be called on Tuesday over the issue.

‘Implement all our demands’

The junior doctors said they, along with senior doctors, are giving the state government until October 21 as the deadline to meet their demands. Debashish Halder, one of the agitating young doctors, told reporters: “We want the Chief Minister (Mamata Banerjee) to sit and discuss and implement all our demands.”

“Unless this is done, all junior and senior doctors in public and private hospitals will be forced to go on strike on Tuesday,” he said after a meeting between junior doctors and their seniors here. Halder said his colleagues are continuing their indefinite fast with their demands.

‘Why didn’t CM Mamata Banerjee come to meet?’

The fast to death of medical agitators demanding justice for the deceased doctor and safety in the workplace entered its 14th day on Friday.

A protesting doctor said that so far six young doctors who had been fasting have been admitted to the hospital after their condition deteriorated. Another protesting doctor, Sayantani Ghosh Hazra, questioned why Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee did not come to meet him. Hazra has been fasting since October 5.

Haldar said young doctors will also protest at various hospitals on Monday. Halder said the protesting doctors would hold a large demonstration on Sunday and asked citizens to join them.
