Seraikela Kharsawan is a famous tourist destination for art lovers that reflects the culture and tradition of Jharkhand. Seraikela is internationally renowned for its traditional and exquisite art of mask making. Chhau dance is a world famous dance style, in which the dancer performs the dance with a mask on his face. During this, the dancer tries to tell the story through his dance. Making the Chhau mask dance is a difficult and laborious task.
In Seraikela, the Mahapatra family has been making masks in collaboration with other artists for about 100 years. Out of the four famous styles of Chhau dance, masks are used in Manbhum and Seraikela styles. While making the mask, colours are added keeping in mind the character of the artist’s dance. Apart from this, while making the mask, the artists also keep in mind the traditional and classical dance style. It takes the artist 8 to 10 days to prepare a mask. After adding colour to the mask, the artist decorates it with crown and jewellery according to the character. So making the Chhau mask dance is a work of patience and restraint. Every year, a large number of tourists from India and abroad come to Seraikela to see the art of making this mask.

Road route – You can reach Seraikela by road from Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Chaibasa and Kolkata. The distance from Seraikela is just 42 kilometers from Jamshedpur, about 23 kilometers from Chaibasa, about 134 kilometers from Ranchi and about 309 kilometers from Kolkata.
railway track – The nearest railway station to Seraikela is Adityapur railway station. Apart from this, you can also come to Seraikela from Tatanagar Junction and Ranchi railway station.
Air route – The nearest airport to Seraikela is Birsa Munda Airport in the capital Ranchi, from where it is just 135 kilometres away.
