Delhi Airport has become the first airport in the country to achieve net-zero carbon emission status under the Airports Council International accreditation programme, DIAL said on Wednesday.

The airport initially set out to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2030, and the target has been achieved well ahead of schedule through several initiatives including the adoption of renewable energy, development of green airport infrastructure and promotion of electric vehicles, it said in a statement.
DIAL said that IGIA has become the first airport in India to successfully achieve net-zero carbon emissions airport status under the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) scheme of Airports Council International (ACI).
“By achieving Level 5 net-zero emissions accreditation in 2024, we are once again demonstrating our commitment to continuous improvement and sustainability.
“As we face the challenges of climate change, we are committed to further reduce our carbon footprint and explore sustainable aviation fuel options to address Scope 3 emissions,” said Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO, Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL).
The ACA programme provides a comprehensive framework for active carbon management at airports, promoting best practice in carbon reduction and offering recognition for achievements. There are five levels of accreditation, with Level 5 being the highest.
“By achieving Tier 5 certification, Delhi Airport has demonstrated significant progress in reducing its Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 90 per cent. The remaining residual emissions have been addressed through approved offset removals, meeting the stringent requirements of the ACA programme,” the statement said.
ACI is a trade association of the world’s airports.
