This year, IIM Kozhikode launched a CARE office (an idea of ​​director Debashis Chatterjee) with an aim to boost the employability of students rather than limiting the scope of management education to short-term job opportunities. The office offers students a platform for long-term employment. career development through three functions: Corporate Access, Corporate Readiness, and Corporate Engagement.

The Corporate Access cell aims to help students better understand the sectors and roles through sector-specific and role-based preparatory workshops with industry bigwigs to bridge the industry knowledge gap between students and industry needs. The Corporate Readiness cell takes care of developing the candidate profile through steps like one-on-one coaching and personal branding workshops, while the Corporate Engagements cell focuses on building sustainable relationships with recruitersInstead of student committees that change with new groups, the cell would be led by a designated professional, supported by a team of 5 to 7 professional recruitment managers that the institute is in the process of hiring.

“Over the last decade, batch sizes have doubled, but the process has not changed,” said Professor Rajesh Srinivas Upadhyayula, dean of strategic programme management at IIM Kozhikode. Meanwhile, the job market is becoming increasingly unpredictable, necessitating multiple career paths.

“The kind of relationship we have with recruiters needs to be very different. There is no lack of preparedness in terms of content and ability to deliver it, but we need to identify where the gaps are and address them. It is about enhancing the professional life of students,” said Upadhyayula. Fresh from a challenging placement season, institutes say they have faced downturn cycles in the past and will experience them in the future as well. This has necessitated taking a different approach to address the emerging scenario.
