IIT Bombay: The preferred choice of JEE Advanced toppers in 2024

Bombay Institute of Technology has emerged as the top choice for engineering aspirants in 2024, with 72 of the top 100 JEE (Advanced) rankers opting for the institute. This marks a continuing trend in preference for the institution, particularly for its computer science programme.

A staggering 72 of the top 100 rankers have joined the IIT Bombay campus, while Delhi Institute of Technology attracted 23, and Madras Institute of Technology attracted two of the top 100. Notably, all of the top 10 finishers chose to study computer science at IIT Bombay, reinforcing its status as a leading destination for engineering talent in India.

IIT Bombay crowds
Demand for IIT Bombay is not new. Of the top 25 finishers, 24 opted for IIT Bombay, and the trend continued with 47 of the top 50 students choosing this institution. This influx shows the institution’s strong appeal among the country’s brightest minds.

The computer science department at IIT Bombay has long been a magnet for top students. JEE (Advanced) 2024 admissions data indicates that computer science at IIT Bombay was the first choice for nearly half of the qualified candidates. Of the top 500 rankers, 179 chose IIT Bombay, followed by 109 who opted for IIT Delhi and 69 who selected IIT Madras.

IIT Bombay Director Professor Shireesh Kedare expressed pride over the continued appeal of the institute among top students. “I am proud that IIT Bombay continues to be the preferred destination for most of the top students in the JEE (Advanced) exam,” he told TOI. He also congratulated the new students for choosing a path that matches their aspirations and goals.

Gender diversity at IIT Bombay is also notable this year. Among the top 500 girls who passed the JEE (Advanced), 16 chose IIT Bombay, and 29 girls and 217 boys from the top 1,000 chose the institute for the next four years.

The preference for IIT Bombay among top students marks a significant shift from previous trends. About 30 years ago, IIT Kharagpur was the most sought-after institution among engineering aspirants. However, this year it did not receive any student from the top 100.

IIT Kanpur, once considered a top-notch destination offering “demigod treatment” to its aspirants, has also seen a shift in preferences. Vishal Misra, an IIT Bombay alumnus and Vice Dean of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at Columbia Engineering, recalled, “During my time, I think Kanpur used to be the most sought-after IIT. The best students used to go to IIT Kanpur.” He attributes IIT Bombay’s current popularity to its vibrant campus environment and robust networking opportunities. Misra observed a shift in the mindset of students, who are now focusing on entrepreneurship and innovation within India rather than looking for opportunities abroad.

Several experts believe that the trend towards IIT Bombay is also due to peer influence. Misra suggested, “If everyone goes to IIT Bombay every year, then, you know, next year they will want to go to IIT Bombay as well.” The campus’s location in Bombay, with its dynamic environment, adds to its appeal.

The recent preference for IIT Bombay signifies a growing inclination among top engineering aspirants towards institutes that offer not only academic excellence but also strong networking opportunities and an entrepreneurial spirit. With the start of the new academic term, IIT Bombay continues to consolidate its status as a top-tier choice for Engineering Education In India.
