IIT Guwahati dean resigns amid massive student protest over ‘academic pressure’

Following the massive protest after the body of a third-year B.Tech student was found hanging on the ground, Guwahati Institute of Technology At the residence, the academic dean has resigned. Students are protesting, claiming that “excessive academic pressure” contributed to the student’s death.

The students had earlier demanded the removal of Professor Krishna from his post as the academic dean. In a recent development, Professor Kanduru V. Krishna, the academic dean of the institute, has tendered his resignation. Massachusetts Institute of Technology The former academic dean of Guwahati, Professor Krishna, is said to be an alumnus of IIT Delhi. He pursued a master’s degree in mathematics from Andhra University and completed his PhD in 2006.

The deceased student, who hailed from Uttar Pradesh, was pursuing a degree in Computer Science and Engineering. He was found hanging in his dormitory room on September 9. Soon after, hundreds of students gathered in front of the administration building, waving posters and raising slogans to express their anger over the toxic academic environment.

“Despite scoring well in the exam, many students failed due to poor attendance. In our batch, at least 200 students failed due to poor attendance. The IIT Guwahati administration has created a toxic environment in the name of academic excellence,” a protesting student told IANS.

Another student claimed that the third-year B.Tech student, who was found dead in the hostel, was subjected to extreme pressure after he failed more than one subject. “He was a brilliant student. He even successfully completed the internship, but the administration forced him to fail some exams citing poor attendance. This led to his death,” the student told IANS. The principal has reportedly asked the students to stop protesting and return to their classes.

Shortly after the student’s death, IIT Guwahati issued a statement saying that the well-being of students was their “top priority” and that they were deeply saddened to report the death of a student from their community. A spokesperson expressed sincere condolences to the student’s family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time. The institution encouraged students to reach out to their support networks to provide a safe and supportive environment for all students.
