The Indian Medical Association (IMA) in Kolkata on Friday suspended the membership of former director of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital Dr Sandip Ghosh amid a CBI probe into the alleged rape and murder of a junior doctor earlier this month.

In an order, the Indian Medical Association said the committee constituted by IMA national president Dr RV Asokan on its own initiative considered the case of rape and murder of the post-graduate resident doctor and the subsequent developments at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

“The undersigned along with the National President also visited the parents of the victim at their home. They had raised their grievances against you (Ghosh) for the handling of the situation as well as the lack of empathy and sensitivity in handling the matter in an appropriate manner befitting the responsibility you bear in your dealings with them,” the order said.

“The state branch of IMA Bengal as well as certain medical associations have also demanded action citing the nature of disrepute you have brought to the profession as a whole,” he said.

The order said the IMA’s disciplinary committee “unanimously decided to suspend him from membership of the Indian Medical Association forthwith.”

On August 26, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) concluded a second round of polygraph tests on former director of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH), Sandip Ghosh, as part of its probe into the rape and murder of a doctor at the institution.

The investigation was launched after a single bench of the High Court ordered the CBI to probe the alleged corruption at the medical college.

The Calcutta High Court has given the CBI three weeks to submit a progress report on the investigation, which is due by September 17.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ordered that the security of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital be handed over to the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) while the ex officio case over the incident was heard.

The junior doctor was found dead in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
