IMD forecasts heavy rains for northeastern states and orange alert issued for next 2 days

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several states in India, including West Bengal, Nagaland, Mizoramand Tripura.

Apart from these states, heavy to very heavy rains are expected in Bihar, Chhattisgarhand parts of southern India. Northwestern states, particularly Uttar Pradesh, are also on alert, with forecasts predicting sustained heavy rainfall over the next 5 to 7 days.

“We have issued an orange alert for today and tomorrow for West Bengal, Nagaland, MizoramTripura. Very heavy rains are forecast here. Heavy to very heavy rains are expected in Bihar, Chhattisgarh and the southern peninsular area… In northwestern states like Uttar Pradesh, heavy rainfall is forecast in the next 5-7 days,” IMD scientist Dr Naresh Kumar told news agency ANI.

Meanwhile, light to heavy rains are being recorded in other parts of the country in many states including Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa, GujaratWest Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthandue to monsoon activity in the western, northern and eastern parts. Flood-like conditions have occurred in some states due to heavy rainfall.

For the next five days, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to witness widespread light to moderate rainfall in the region. Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan Scattered to fairly widespread showers are expected. Punjab, Haryanaand Delhi, the meteorological department has forecast scattered rains.
