A rare cyclone is expected to form over the Arabian Sea on Friday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The cyclone, named Asna, will be the first of its kind in August since 1976. It is expected to travel from the Saurashtra-Kutch area in Gujarat towards the coast of Oman.

Cyclone Asna to form in the Arabian Sea

A deep depression over Saurashtra and Kutch areas in Gujarat is expected to develop into Cyclone Asna on Friday, marking an unusual prevalence for August. According to the IMD, this cyclonic typhoon is expected to emerge over the northeast Arabian Sea, moving west-southwest towards the coast of Oman. The cyclone will be named “Asna,” a name suggested by Pakistan.

Historic rarity of August cyclones

Cyclones forming in the Arabian Sea in August are extraordinarily rare. Only three such storms have been recorded between 1891 and 2023, with the last occurring in 1976. The 1976 cyclone formed over Odisha, crossed into the Arabian Sea, and eventually weakened near the coast of Oman.

Unusual weather patterns and intensity

IMD meteorologists have noted that the modern hurricane is unusual due to its sustained intensity over the past few days. The tropical hurricane is sandwiched between anticyclones, one over the Tibetan plateau and another over the Arabian peninsula, which contributes to its power. The deep depression has already brought heavy rains in the Saurashtra and Kutch regions, which have received 86% more rainfall than every day this season.

Additional meteorological developments

In addition to the Arabian Sea cyclone, another low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify on Friday. This system is likely to move towards the coasts of northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha and may develop into a depression on Sunday.
