‘Immense potentials for lighthouse tourism; Iconic structures showcase India’s maritime heritage.

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said on October 19 that lighthouse tourism is generating significant employment opportunities for the local people. Speaking at the second National Lighthouse Festival that began in Puri, the Odisha minister said that the festival aims to harness the immense potential of lighthouse tourism while focusing on the preservation of these historic maritime structures, infusing tourism growth with heritage conservation.

“Lighthouse tourism has provided employment to many people and at the same time informed our next generations about the maritime history of the country. In the coming days, this lighthouse tourism will only grow,” Sonowal said.

Organized by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), this is the second lighthouse festival. after the first one was held in Goa.

On the occasion, Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Shantanu Thakur highlighted the importance of developing lighthouse tourism to enhance local economies and safeguard India’s rich maritime heritage.

“The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has embarked on a transformative journey to revitalize our historic lighthouses. These majestic structures, which have long guided sailors, are now becoming centers of tourism, culture and learning. With the development of 75 iconic lighthouses across the country, we are not only preserving history but also creating vibrant spaces for recreation and community engagement,” Thakur explained.

A comprehensive presentation by the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships outlined the current status and future opportunities of lighthouse tourism in India, emphasizing various ongoing initiatives.

With an investment of Rs 60 crore, 75 iconic lighthouses have been developed in nine coastal states and one union territory, each of which has become a symbol of heritage and entertainment, with modern amenities like museums, amphitheaters and playgrounds, according to officials. In Odisha, five lighthouses (Gopalpur, Puri, Chandrabhaga, Paradip and False Point) have been upgraded to promote lighthouse tourism.
