In Gaza crisis, girls are forced to cut their hair due to severe shortage of water and soap

Dr. Lobna al-Azaiza, a pediatrician in Gaza, is facing an unprecedented crisis as shortages of basic goods become increasingly severe. With the ongoing Israeli blockade and ten months of conflict, the region is facing severe shortages of essential items such as combs, shampoo, soap and menstrual products. These shortages extend to waste collection and wastewater treatment, leading to deteriorating sanitary conditions.

Health impacts and increased disease

Dr Al-Azaiza has resorted to recommending that girls who do not have a comb get their hair cut, a practical solution to the overwhelming shortage of hygiene products. The lack of hygiene products is exacerbating health problems, with scabies, fungal infections and other skin diseases becoming more common. “The most common problems we are seeing are rashes and skin diseases, caused by overcrowding in the camps, high temperatures in the tents and lack of water to bathe properly,” said Dr Al-Azaiza.
