State Department Deputy Spokesman Vedant Patel said this at the daily press conference on Wednesday, as quoted by PTI.
The spokesperson was responding to a question on communication between India and the US on the situation in Bangladesh after the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina government, PTI reported.
“We have been in touch with our Indian partners and other countries in the region to discuss recent developments in Bangladesh,” Patel said. “We welcome the new government’s focus on restoring the safety and security of members of minority communities as well.”
The Hindu American Foundation, a US-based organisation, on Wednesday urged the White House to act to protect the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh.
“Latest reports indicate that the President (Joe Biden) is not commenting on the plight of Bangladeshi Hindus despite continued reports of attacks,” the foundation was quoted as saying by PTI.
“We demand action now! The silence of the President, Vice President, and Secretary Blinken on the atrocities committed against Hindus in Bangladesh is unacceptable. Lives have been lost, homes and temples have been destroyed, but the US government has condemned nothing,” the foundation said in a post on X.
HinduACTion, a Washington-based NGO, said members of the Hindu community in rural Bangladesh are the most targeted.
“Their remoteness allows Islamists more freedom and time to attack them. Now that Mohammad Yunus is the new interim leader, should the vice president and the State Department work to enable grassroots education and awareness that will ensure that the country’s madrasa curriculum and public discourse are purged of anti-Hindu theological content?” he said in X. “We hope the president and his advisers realize that if Bangladesh loses the last eight percent of its Hindus, it will be a Taliban state with a thick canopy of trees.”
