Delhi Metro services will start operating at 4:00 am on 15 August 2024 to facilitate the public attendance at the Independence Day celebrations. The early start is aimed at ensuring that attendees can reach the ceremony on time.
On normal days, the Delhi Metro runs from 5:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., although timings may vary slightly depending on the line and station.
Special schedules and frequencies
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced that trains will start running from terminal stations on all lines from 4:00 am. Initially, trains will run at a frequency of 15 minutes till 6:00 am. After that time, the regular schedule will remain in place for the rest of the day.
Travel privileges for invitation card holders
To cater to those attending the Independence Day ceremony, special travel privileges will be offered. Persons holding an official invitation card issued by the Ministry of Defence will be allowed to enter and travel on the Delhi Metro by producing a valid government-issued photo ID at stations. This arrangement will allow departure and onward return journeys from three specific stations – Lal Quila, Jama Masjid and Chandni Chowk.
Special Announcements and Refunds
Regular announcements will be made inside the trains throughout the day to keep passengers informed of these developments. The Ministry of Defence will reimburse the cost of the journey to those who use the metro with an invitation card.
At 7:30 am, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver his 11th consecutive Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort.
