In what is being considered great news for the country, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat announced that India Tourism is set to become one of the top 10 global tourist destinations in the next five years. With this, he noted that the contribution of the tourism sector to India’s economy is expected to increase from 7.9% to over 10% in the near future.

He further revealed that the tourism industry is seeking investments from private players for further boost as part of the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The minister also made special mention of Buddhist tourism, domestic tourism and public-private partnership models. “Public-private partnership models are being promoted to create new destinations and resources for tourism,” he said.

According to the Minister, India offers everything that tourists are looking for after the Covid-19 pandemic. Speaking at the forum, he said, “People want to see India and get to know it. I see domestic and international tourism going through a boom in the coming years, where domestic tourism will be the key. Of the total tourists coming to India, 65% come to just seven Indian states.”

He further acknowledged the keenness of Indian states to enhance their tourism sectors and contribute to the country’s economy. Over the past decade, India has witnessed rapid growth, especially in infrastructure, which has further boosted the tourism boom. Along with this, the minister lauded India’s long-standing tradition of attracting travellers from across the world.

He said that for centuries, India has attracted travellers from all over the world and with renewed efforts to showcase attractive tourist destinations, India will outperform the global average. “Our culture will help us emerge as the most respectable nation in the world,” he added.
