India vs Australia: Ricky Ponting predicts the winner of this year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has made advance predictions for the five-match Test series between India and Australia to be played Down Under later this year.

In an interview to ICC, Ponting spoke at length about the importance of the series and also predicted the outcome of the series.

“It will be a competitive series and as I said, I think Australia has a lot to prove against India in Australia after what happened in the last two series here,” Ponting said.

“We’re also playing five Test matches again, which is the other really important aspect of this series. The last two times we’ve only played four Test matches. Five matches, I think everyone is really excited about that and I don’t know if there will be too many drawn matches. Obviously, I’m going to back Australia to win and I’m never going to bet against Australia. There will be a draw somewhere and there will be bad weather somewhere, so I’m going to say 3-1 in favour of Australia,” Ponting added.

The five-match series will begin on November 22 in Perth. The first Test match will be followed by Test matches in Adelaide (December 6), Brisbane (December 14), Melbourne (December 26) and Sydney (January 3, 2025).

India have beaten Australia in the last four Test series. This winning streak includes two series in Australia in 2018/19 and 2020/21. In fact, the last time Australia managed to beat India in a Test series was in 2014/15.

Why is the Test series between India and Australia called Border-Gavaskar Trophy?

Although India and Australia played their first Test match during India’s tour of Australia in 1947/48, the Test series between the two nations was named as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 1996. The trophy was named after the two legendary Australian and Indian cricketers, Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar.

The first player to appear in a Test match with the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was in New Delhi. India managed to beat Australia by 7 wickets in that match.
