The stage is set for the prestigious Men’s Asian Champions Trophy, which kicks off on Sunday at the Moqi Hockey Training Base overlooking the Nierji Dam in Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia, China. Reigning Olympic bronze medallists India start as favourites to defend the title, while hosts China, Japan, Pakistan, Korea and Malaysia have all arrived hoping to make a strong showing in the showpiece tournament.
Last year, India won the title at home, making them the only team to have won four titles in the history of the tournament. Team captain Harmanpreet Singh is keen to continue India’s dominance in the continental championships this year as well.
“Last year’s Asian Champions Trophy gave us the right momentum for the Asian Games and we followed it up with the Olympics triumph by standing on the podium again. This time too, we want to start the new Olympic cycle by winning this tournament,” Harmanpreet said in a Hockey India release. “While we have ten Olympic team members taking part in this tournament, we have some youngsters who are trying to make an impact on the team. In terms of play, our strong point is attack and short corner kicks, but we will look to play with a structured defence, particularly against teams like Japan, Malaysia and Pakistan. This is an important tournament for us in terms of world ranking points and we are ready for the challenge,” he added.
India will begin their campaign with the opening match against hosts China, followed by their second match on September 9 against Japan. After a day’s rest, India will take on last year’s runners-up Malaysia on the 11th and play Korea on September 12.

The team arrived in Moqi on September 4 and are in good shape to defend their title. “We arrived here earlier this week and have had a great time on the pitch. The weather is suitable for us but it does get a bit chilly at night. The facilities are amazing and perhaps one of the most beautiful hockey stadiums in the world. The excitement of hosting the first international tournament here is evident and we are looking forward to playing quality matches and entertaining the hockey lovers of this region,” concluded Vivek Sagar Prasad.
