Indian Hockey Team For Asian Champions Trophy Announced; Harmanpreet Singh Eyes More Glory After Olympics

Hockey in India On Wednesday, August 28, a star-studded 18-member team was announced for the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy In China. Harmanpreet Singh will continue to lead the team in his first assignment after legendary goalkeeper PR Srejeesh announced his retirement.

Defending champions India will take on China in the opening match against the hosts. Apart from India, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Japan and China will battle it out for the top prize in a tournament to be played in Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia, from September 8 to 17.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh shared a post on social media, saying that his forces will aim to gain more glory in China.

“Had a wonderful time with the boys in Paris, now off to the next one in China 🇨🇳 Time to make the country proud again,” Harmanpreet Singh’s post on X read.

Ten players from the team that won bronze at the Paris Olympics have been included in the squad for the Asian Champions Trophy, while five players have been rested. PR Srejeesh announced his retirement after India’s win over Spain.

In goal, Krishan Bahadur Pathak and Suraj Karkera will look to take Sreejesh’s place. Defenders Jarmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas, Harmanpreet Singh, Jugraj Singh, Sanjay and Sumit have been called up.

The midfield is young and features players like Raj Kumar Pal, Nilakanta Sharma, Manpreet Singh and Mohd Raheel, while Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh, Araijeet Singh Hundal, Uttam Singh and debutant Gurjot Singh will shoulder the goal-scoring responsibility.

Hardik Singh, Mandeep Singh, Lalit Upadhyay, Shamsher Singh and Gurjant Singh have all been rested. Speaking about the composition of the Indian team, the head coach Craig Fulton He said the team has been carefully selected to give young players a chance to shine and gain valuable experience as the Men in Blue look to gain strength for the challenges ahead.

“The new Olympic cycle for us starts with the Asian Champions Trophy and we are ready for the challenge. While we have rested a few players from the team that played in Paris, we have brought in some youngsters who have done well in training and have earned the opportunity to play in the Asian Champions Trophy. Gurjot will be making his international debut and I think this is a great opportunity for the youngsters who have received a call-up to shine. As a team, we want to continue to dominate on the Asian continent and we will go to China to retain the title,” said the South African.
