‘Indian team should not travel to Pakistan for ICC Champions Trophy 2025’; former Pakistan cricketer reveals why

Now that the T20 World Cup is over, the next big event on the ICC calendar is next year’s Champions Trophy, which will be held in Pakistan. Ahead of the event, numerous reports had started to emerge that the men in blue might not travel to Pakistan for the showpiece event due to security concerns and instead, the 2025 Champions Trophy might be held in a hybrid model. While the BCCI is yet to clarify its stance on going to Pakistan, a former cricketer from the neighbouring nation has urged the Indian team not to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy.

Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria, in an interaction with Sports Tak, stated that the Indian team should not travel to Pakistan due to the current situation in the country and the tournament is likely to be held in a hybrid model with India’s matches being played in Dubai.

“Looking at the situation in Pakistan, I have to say that the Indian team should not go to Pakistan and Pakistan should think about it and then the ICC will take its decision and most probably it will be a hybrid model, it will be played in Dubai,” Kaneria told Sports Tak.

The ICC Champions Trophy is scheduled to be held in Pakistan in February-March. However, due to ongoing political tensions between India and Pakistan, the Indian cricket team has not played in Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup.

Kaneriaya, while stressing that the BCCI is doing a great job, said: “Safety of the players is the first priority. Respect is the second priority. There are many things. I think the BCCI is doing a great job. I think all the countries will accept the final decision. I think it will be a hybrid model,” Kaneria added.

Meanwhile, there have been calls within Pakistan, from the cricket board and former players, urging the BCCI to send the national team to Pakistan given the cricket craze and Indian stars like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the country.

Recently, former Pakistani batsman and wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal had urged India to travel to Pakistan and keep aside political matters. He told the Times of India, “I really enjoyed those moments. India should travel to Pakistan and Pakistan should go to India. Let us keep aside political matters and play and love cricket,” Akmal told the Times of India.
